The Mobile Data Association estimates that 78.9 billion text messages were sent in the UK in 2008; most of these would have been transmitted via an SMS gateway.
For the average mobile phone user, an SMS gateway is of little interest and few people know or understand the reason for their existence.
The British Royal Family, despite the best efforts of the late Princess Diana, remains a bastion of conservative living. However, even they are stepping out to embrace the new communication avenues offered by technological advances.
