SMPP: Relaying Critical Information

December 30, 2009

You’ve got to admit, SMPP is really taking off with companies big and small employing this protocol to get in touch with customers and consequently reaping the benefits. It not only boils down to communicating time-sensitive information, but also customer satisfaction.

As the year comes to an end, many are making their way to family and friends, wherever they may be. And as a result of the increased amount of people in airports, it comes as no surprise that security is stepped up as well.

This was the case for many travellers who found themselves travelling with British Airways from London’s Heathrow Airport to the United States of America on Boxing Day, each of whom received a text message advising them on stricter security measures following yet another bomb plot incident, as reported by the Daily Mail. And one can only assume that relaying these messages was made possible with SMPP.

Why SMPP?

How would you get thousands of text messages out in the shortest amount of time? Taking into account that people are especially rushed and eager to get out the front door when it comes to taking a long trip, you’d want to ensure that your message gets sent as fast as possible. SMPP relays messages to the SMS gateway in rapid succession, thereby making light of a bulk SMS load.

Equally important is the fact that SMPP allows for error checking and reporting, which means you’ll be able to see who got your message, and who didn’t. In the scenario above this could come in quite handy – if a passenger’s phone was switched off or couldn’t receive the message for some other reason, this feature would allow British Airways’ customer service agents to get in touch with the prospective passenger by other means and avoid any unforeseen confusion when said customer arrives at the airport totally unaware of the new security procedures.

So what’s in it for you?

The benefits you can reap with SMPP depend entirely on your company and what you have to offer. But we can tell you that it meant a great deal of customer satisfaction and some excellent publicity for British Airways. No doubt they’ll be getting more business in the near future as the potential and convenience of this type of communication will appeal to most if not all prospective travellers.

More on SMPP

Regardless of the industry you are in, SMPP, or the Short Message Peer-to-Peer protocol, can be adapted to suit your business needs. It ‘runs’ on the TCP protocol, which means it allows your native software environment to communicate with the SMS gateway over any network that uses TCP, like the internet. This is done through the SMPP API (Application Programming Interface), and will allow you to communicate in bulk, in rapid succession and with the added benefit of flexible reporting to ensure efficient communication.

SMPP allows for total integration, which means implementation costs will be minimal while your business potential gets maximised.
