This means that more people will have smartphones, providing greater marketing potential using a variety of media… on one device. So why should you continue to use bulk SMS to penetrate your target audience, instead of any of the other available media?

It’s about affordability

Because having a smartphone won’t really change anything, except that those who previously didn’t have one are now able to access online mobile media and associated applications whenever they have the airtime to do so. People are more inclined to read an SMS, because it doesn’t shave off any of their airtime – it’s free.

But don’t think it’s about airtime alone. It’s about your normal, run-of-the-mill, standard ticking-away time, too – the ruler by which we measure our lifespan. Men and women, even those on your more expensive contracts, often don’t have the two to five minutes to speak to a member of your sales-team or read an entire email sales-pitch – it’s something just about everyone will be able to testify to. But they will read your whole SMS. And if they’re interested, they’ll make a mental note or save your SMS for later viewing. Easy – that’s where bulk SMS comes in.

It’s About Everyone

Don’t forget that, while smartphones are becoming more common-place, not everyone has one, and it’s not necessarily about financial disposition. It could simply be choice. Excluding that valuable (non-smartphone) portion of your demographic could effectively shrink your target market. Sending out bulk SMS messages promoting special offers or even supplying a link to a web page containing said special offer remains the more effective way to reach your entire mobile-enabled audience.

  1. I agree, but I also think you have to be careful. Initially or every once in a while, it would definitely be wise to send out bulk SMS. However, doing it constantly will turn people off from your brand. Too much and consumers will look at your sms as SPAM.
