Easy Mobile Messaging with SMTP

September 3, 2009

Just the thought of transforming in-house communication systems with email to SMS features using the SMTP protocol can be daunting for many companies. However, for those UK businesses with existing email servers, adding a mobile component through an email to SMS application is simple. An email message can be created in an email application, such as Outlook, sent onto a SMS gateway using an SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) application programming interface (API), where it is translated into a text message and routed to a mobile phone.

These email to SMS or SMTP SMS gateway APIs are the industry standard for businesses needing high-volume messaging capacity. Email to SMS technology is used to great advantage by many UK businesses and offers distinct advantages over other forms of communication.

1. It is immediate and therefore very effective. Unlike email, SMS messages are delivered directly to the recipients’ most personal communication device, their mobile phone. By using the mobile phone as a primary communication device, you allow freedom of movement to customers, staff and suppliers who no longer need to be desk-bound in order to receive and respond to your message.

2. People are comfortable with text messaging, in the UK alone over 6.5 billion text messages are sent a month according to the Mobile Data Association. Consumers are more likely to read and respond to a SMS message than they are to an email message.

3. Email to SMS functionality is easy to set-up. There is no need to purchase software or undergo technical training. It is free to set-up and you only pay for the text messages that you send.

4. There are several other features available to email to SMS applications, including the ability to send text messages longer than 160 characters, to merge existing distribution list databases, to set personalised sender ID options and request message delivery acknowledgement.

5. Email to SMS opens up additional revenue streams for businesses, as these messages are capable of carrying binary data such as ringtones and logo’s. Sales can therefore be generated directly from a mobile platform. Email to SMS messages can also be sent in plain text, flash and Unicode (Arabic, Chinese etc).

Email to SMS applications are used in a wide variety of industries for a range of purposes. The hospitality sector used email to SMS messaging for travel delay alerts and booking confirmations. Marketing departments use email to SMS applications to manage mobile marketing campaigns to their existing email databases. The service industry uses this type of messaging for appointment reminders and customer service follow-ups and it is a firm favourite for businesses that have mobile employees such as sales persons, forex traders and insurance brokers. Financial institutions have also implemented email to SMS messaging to notify clients of movement on their accounts, changes to their policies or updates on the status of insurance claims.

There are a host of other benefits and features of email to SMS or SMTP APIs to discover.
