Recruitment via SMS on the rise

July 1, 2009

The World Bank and other leading financial institutions are warning that recovery from the economic recession will be a lengthy process and that both businesses and consumers should not expect any real upturn until mid-2010. With job losses in the formal sector expected to reach 3.5 million over the next year, both organisations and job seekers would do well to include mobile resources in their employment arsenal.

Monster, a leading recruitment site, launched its Target SMS service in the UK in June of this year. Members of Monster whose CV’s match an employers’ search criteria will receive notification of job opportunities by SMS text message. This service is free to all job seekers who have joined Monster. The site features CV-creating tools as well as career advice and other market information to ensure that job-seekers are up-to-date with conditions in the current job market.

Speed is of the essence when looking for employment today and this type of mobile recruitment service offers a simple solution in real-time. Job-seekers do not need to be permanently online and can actively pursue their lives without missing out on an employment opportunity. Product Director of Monster UK, James Brian, says that “Given that the vast majority of people carry a mobile, it makes perfect sense to use them as a real-time tool to keep in touch with potential jobs via SMS text message.”

‘Email-to-SMS’ SMTP application programming interfaces (API) that enable connection to an SMS gateway, makes it possible to type the SMS message that recruiters wish to send to job-seekers in the form of an email; select the recipients from their mobile subscriber list, personalise the message with name or membership number information and then, just press send while still inside their email client (like Microsoft Outlook). SMS messages will be delivered almost instantaneously to those job seekers. Although the SMTP API doesn’t enable two-way SMS messaging there are supplementary API’s (like the HTTP API) that will even allow applicants to respond to the SMS notifications, if they are interested in knowing more about an employment opportunity. With such a simple process change and technology implementation, recruiters can eliminate expensive phone calls and provide an information service that’s convenient for job-seekers and recruiters alike.

Mobile recruitment is just one of the valuable applications of SMS messaging, one which is set to become an important new tool in a recruitment agency’s marketing arsenal. The ease of use enabled by using an SMTP SMS API to send the messages from an email client, make the adoption process simple and uses obvious.
